Practical spirituality for rest and Sabbath: reverse self reliance, trust in god, and recover from burnout with Laura

Season 1, Episode 700:26:06Published March 18, 2025

Practical spirituality means learning how to rest and practice Sabbath in a 24-7 culture, without the guilt. In this episode, I sit down with my friend Laura, Christian author and founder of the Love Fast Live Slow Movement, to talk about burnout, self reliance, and how trust in god changes the way we carry our days.

Laura shares how her hustle mentality finally caught up with her health, including severe adrenal fatigue and stage three kidney disease, and why that was the wake up call she needed. She talks about the sneaky lie so many women live under: the more productive you are, the more worthy you are. And then we name the hard part out loud. Even when you finally slow down, you can still feel guilty for resting.

We also get super practical by going back to the bible and looking at real people who hit a wall:
- Elijah's crash after a spiritual high, and God's simple answer of sleep and food
- Jethro calling out Moses for trying to do it all without delegating
- Jesus taking prayer breaks and choosing solitude
- Joshua and the Israelites returning to Gilgal again and again to worship, remember, remove hindrances, and reset before going back into battle

One of my favorite takeaways from Laura is this: busyness is not a sin, it's a heart issue. Some seasons are truly busy, and you cannot prevent that. But you can keep up with God's tempo and return to your source often, instead of trying to power through on self strength.

If you feel stuck in a bondage mindset to a full calendar, this conversation is for you. Laura prays for our listeners, asking God for clarity, surrender, and the strength to carry what is yours to carry, no more and no less.

And friend, here's the shift we keep coming back to: rest is faith that when you stop, God will still work on your behalf.
