Faith encouragement in a hard season: trusting God in the fog during my daughter’s rare anemia diagnosis

Season 1, Episode 2000:24:01Published June 17, 2025

Faith encouragement for the moments you feel wrung out and unsure how to keep going. In this solo episode, I'm sharing what I'm living in real time: a heavy, tender season as we stay near the Children's Hospital in Nashville after my daughter was diagnosed 74 days ago with a rare type of anemia. There have been weeks in the hospital, blood draws, transfusions, infusion medicine, and now the after-effects of coming off high-dose steroids. On top of that, my own health has been flaring again, and I've had to admit that I can't keep putting myself on the back burner forever.

And friend, I'm going to be honest. My walk with God has felt dry. I'm still praying. I'm still opening my Bible. But some days it feels like I'm reading without connecting. I hear the words, but I don't feel them. I'm talking, but I'm not hearing a response.

So what do you do with that?

I share the Scriptures I've been clinging to in the fog, like Psalm 13's "How long, Lord?" and the reminder from Romans 8 that the Spirit helps us in our weakness and intercedes with groans too deep for words. I talk about what it's been like to experience an unexplainable peace in the middle of unanswered questions, and the quiet grace moments that keep showing up anyway. Nurses taking time to explain things to my daughter. People lingering in our hospital room and saying, "This room feels different." A worship song landing at the exact right time. Watching my nine-year-old push through pain and ride her bike again with a popcorn bucket in a purple-and-white dress, determined to live life.

I also share what's practically helping me keep showing up:
- Going on intentional walks with my husband, sometimes talking, sometimes in silence
- Letting worship music shape the atmosphere
- Asking for help and saying no when rest is the right answer
- Thanking God for at least one moment of grace every day, even on the hardest days

The perspective I want to leave you with is simple and hard-earned: peace doesn't always show up with clarity. Sometimes it shows up in the middle of the fog, when nothing makes sense, and you still whisper, "God, I trust you."

If you're in that place where your strength feels spent and your spirit feels quiet, you are not broken. God is still good. And you are not alone. If you want me to pray with you, message me and let's pray together, sister.
