Faith in practice for hearing God’s voice: how to recognize, discern, and follow (with Alana)

Season 1, Episode 1900:36:28Published June 10, 2025

Faith in practice starts here if you've been asking, "How do I know it's God?" In this episode, Alana and I talk about hearing God's voice in real life, not just in church settings. We're getting practical about how to recognize when God is speaking versus your own thoughts, emotions, or the enemy, and how to grow in discernment without getting overwhelmed.

Alana shares how she used to believe hearing God mainly meant reading the Bible (and yes, that is always the safest place to start). But over time, she learned that God also speaks in different ways, and that learning your personal "language" matters. We talk about the framework she learned through a study called Prophetic Personalities, where people often experience God through seeing, hearing, knowing, and feeling. And we go straight into the tension many of us carry, especially as women: "Can God really speak through my feelings?"

In this conversation, you'll hear:
- Why God's voice always lines up with Scripture, even when the direction is specific to your life
- How to ask better questions in the moment: "Is this mine? Whose is this? What do I do with it, and when?"
- Why community matters when you're learning discernment and trying to steward words well
- A simple starting point if you're in survival mode and everything feels too loud
- How practice builds familiarity, like recognizing your child's footsteps in the night
- What it can look like to carry intercession and spiritual warfare without confusing it with mental health struggles

Alana also shares a powerful reminder that you don't have to sprint just because you're excited. Sometimes God asks you to pray privately, store something up, or wait for the right timing. And when you do get something for someone else, you don't have to carry it alone. Run it through biblical filters. Talk to trusted leaders. Bring it to safe, spiritually mature friends. God is not a God of confusion.

If you're new to following Jesus or you've been walking with Him for years but still feel unsure about discernment, this episode is a steady on-ramp. Get in the Bible. Get in community. And keep showing up. Over time, you'll learn His "footsteps," and you'll know when it's Him.

And friend, our shared encouragement is simple: put on the armor of God, stay in the Word, and don't try to do this alone.
