How Christian Women Can Recognize What They’re Carrying and Surrender It to God Earlier

How many of you have reached the end of the day exhausted, but you can’t quite explain why? You made the meals, answered the messages, cared for the people you love, and kept moving, yet something still feels heavy. In our recent conversation about how to surrender burdens to God, Jenna and I talked about the expectations, unanswered prayers, responsibilities, and outcomes we quietly carry. This is for the Christian woman who wants to recognize that weight sooner, bring it to Jesus, and take the next faithful step with Him.

Let me tell you, friends, I know how easy it is to keep holding something until the pressure finally shows up in your body, your thoughts, or your relationships. We often wait for the tipping point before we surrender burdens to God. But the Lord is kind enough to meet us long before we collapse.

Recognize the weight you are carrying before it becomes overwhelming

Jenna shared a picture that stayed with me. As a mother, homeschool mom, wife, and woman living with a chronic medical condition, she knows what it feels like to have what she called many tabs open in her mind. There are appointments, lessons, meals, schedules, decisions, and the needs of everyone around her. She also carries her own health concerns and treatments.

During a time of corporate prayer at church, the Holy Spirit gently showed her that she had been striving. She had been trying to build, plan, and figure out what to do next in her own strength. Hand to heart, I have been there too. I can pray about something and then immediately take the reins again because I want to feel certain that I am doing my part.

Can I tell you something? Exhaustion is sometimes a signal that we need rest, but it can also reveal that we are carrying responsibility for an outcome God never placed in our hands. Learning to surrender burdens to God begins with honest awareness. We have to notice what is happening inside us without shaming ourselves for it.

Look for these signs of an unnecessary burden

  • You keep replaying the same situation and trying to solve every possible outcome.
  • You feel responsible for everyone’s emotions, decisions, or spiritual growth.
  • You are unable to rest because resting feels like falling behind.
  • You are praying for God’s direction while rushing ahead without waiting for His answer.
  • Your value rises and falls with your productivity or the number of things you complete.
  • You feel physically tense, emotionally irritable, or mentally scattered most of the time.

These signs are invitations to pause, not accusations. You may need practical support, counseling, medical care, or a conversation with a trusted friend. Asking for help is not failure. It is one way God reminds us that we were created for dependence, community, and grace.

Jesus invites you to surrender burdens to God and receive rest

Jesus says in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (CSB).

Notice the order of this invitation. Jesus does not begin by telling us to organize better, try harder, or become strong enough to carry more. He says, “Come to me.” The rest is found in returning to Him, not in perfect circumstances.

In the episode, Jenna explained the picture of being yoked to a stronger ox. The stronger one leads and carries the greater weight. That helped me think about surrender in a fresh way. When we walk closely with Jesus, we are not trying to direct the entire path alone. We are learning His pace, following His lead, and trusting His strength.

We often want to surrender burdens to God while keeping control of the timeline, the method, and the result. I think that is why surrender can feel so difficult. We may release the burden in prayer, then pick it up again because the answer has not appeared yet. My friend, you can return it to Him as many times as you need to.

For practical help with anxious thoughts and uncertain circumstances, you may also benefit from these biblical ways to manage anxiety article. Scripture gives us a place to bring our minds back when they start racing toward problems that have not happened.

Practice surrender before the tipping point

Jenna said something that I want you to remember: slowing down is not falling behind. Slowing down can help us return to the step where Jesus is waiting so we can take the next one with Him. We do not have to wait until we are in tears, burned out, resentful, or completely depleted before we surrender burdens to God.

So what does earlier surrender look like in real life? It can be simple and ordinary. It might happen in the car, before you open your email, while you make breakfast, or when you notice your shoulders tightening. The goal is to build a habit of turning toward Jesus before your thoughts carry you twenty steps into the future.

Use a simple three-question pause

When you notice yourself striving, stop and ask:

  1. What am I carrying right now? Name the burden clearly. Is it a child’s choice, a financial need, a health concern, a ministry decision, or the desire to be understood?
  2. What part belongs to me today? Separate obedience from outcome. Your part may be making a phone call, having an honest conversation, preparing a lesson, or resting.
  3. What am I asking Jesus to hold? Give Him the result, the timing, the opinions of others, and the parts you cannot control.

This pause helps us surrender burdens to God while they are still visible. We do not have to analyze every emotion before bringing it to Him. A simple prayer can be enough: “Jesus, this is heavy. Show me what obedience looks like today, and help me leave the outcome with You.”

Add Scripture to habits you already have

Jenna encouraged listeners to use an “easy plus one” approach. Add one small practice to something you already do. Say a verse when you buckle your seatbelt. Put a Scripture reference on your phone’s lock screen. Pray while you wash dishes. Read one verse aloud before you begin your workday.

Romans 10:17 says, “So faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the message about Christ” (CSB). Jenna shared that reading, writing, and speaking God’s Word helps truth settle more deeply into us. When we hear ourselves repeat what God says, we are training our attention to return to Him.

Try one of these declarations:

  • “The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need” (Psalm 23:1, CSB).
  • “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13, CSB).
  • “The joy of the Lord is my strength” (Nehemiah 8:10, CSB).
  • “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment” (2 Timothy 1:7, CSB).

These verses are not slogans we use to deny pain. They are truths we speak while we bring our real circumstances to God. If your thoughts often spiral around decisions, this guide to Christian prayer for decision making article can help you practice listening instead of obsessing.

Trust God with the outcome while taking the next faithful step

One of my favorite images from the conversation was the staircase. We would never expect to reach the top of a staircase in one jump. Yet many of us approach God’s calling, healing, parenting, work, or future as if we must solve everything at once.

We want the whole plan. God often gives us the next step.

Taking one faithful step might look like scheduling the appointment, apologizing, opening the Bible, setting a boundary, asking for help, or going to bed instead of pushing through. It can look very small, but obedience is not measured by how impressive the step appears. Faithfulness is measured by whether we are willing to follow Jesus with what He has placed in front of us.

Jenna also spoke about tying our identity to what we accomplish. When our checklist is full, we feel worthy. When the day goes poorly, we feel like we have failed. But our identity is not built on productivity. We are loved because God has chosen to love us. We live from Christ’s victory, not toward a victory we must earn.

That truth changes how we surrender burdens to God. We no longer have to prove that we are capable of holding everything. We can receive help. We can stop. We can wait. We can let another person serve us without feeling ashamed.

Reflect, pray, and put surrender into practice today

Take a few quiet minutes with the Lord. You may want to write your answers in a journal or share them with a trusted faith friend.

  • Name the weight: What has been taking up the most space in your thoughts this week?
  • Notice the signal: How is that burden affecting your body, emotions, sleep, prayer life, or relationships?
  • Separate your assignment: What is one faithful action God may be asking you to take today?
  • Release the outcome: What result, timeline, or person do you need to place in His hands?
  • Choose your reminder: What verse or short prayer will help you surrender burdens to God when the worry returns?

Let’s pray together: Heavenly Father, thank You for seeing every burden we carry, even the ones we have become used to holding. Forgive us for striving in our own strength. Teach us to come to Jesus earlier, before exhaustion takes over. Show us what belongs to us today, and give us grace to release everything else into Your loving hands. Help us trust Your timing, follow Your lead, and receive the rest You promise. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Friends, surrender is a practice. You may release something in the morning and feel the urge to pick it up again by lunchtime. When that happens, come back to Jesus. Come back to His Word. Come back to the truth that His strength is enough for this moment.

If you have been carrying more than God asked you to hold, you are not behind. You are being invited closer.
