## How to Read the Bible for Yourself and Make Faith-based Decisions with Confidence

Learning how to make biblical decisions can feel intimidating when you’ve spent years asking someone else to explain what Scripture means. In our recent podcast conversation, Amanda shared that she had been around church for much of her life but didn’t know how to read the Bible for herself and apply it to everyday choices. She took a yearlong course, kept practicing, and began to approach God’s Word with growing confidence. Her story reminds me that you can learn this, too. You don’t have to understand everything at once to start building a real relationship with Jesus.

Listen: [From Knowing About God to Walking With Him: Buildi... podcast episode](/podcast/from-knowing-about-god-to-walking-with-him-building-a-real)

If you’re wondering how to make biblical decisions about work, family, relationships, or a change you didn’t expect, this article offers a simple way to begin. We’ll look at how to read a passage in context, bring your questions to God, and seek wise counsel without giving away your responsibility to listen and respond. In the episode, Amanda talks about moving from knowing about God to learning to walk with Him in ordinary life. That kind of relationship grows as we spend time in Scripture and put what we learn into practice.

## Learn to read the Bible for yourself

Amanda told me she used to ask other people to translate the Bible for her. She knew how to read, but opening Scripture and figuring out what it meant for her life felt different. That honesty stayed with me. Many women have been taught Bible stories or heard sermons for years and still wonder, “Can I understand this on my own?”

Yes, you can grow in understanding. You don’t need a degree or perfect memory. You need time, patience, and a willingness to read carefully. Teachers, pastors, study guides, and trusted friends can help, but their guidance should lead you back to Scripture, not replace your own time with it.

Start with a short passage. Read it more than once. Notice who is speaking, who is being addressed, and what happens before and after the verses. Ask what the passage shows about God, people, and faithful living. Some passages are poetry, some are letters, and some tell a story. Paying attention to the kind of writing helps you understand what the author is saying.

Second Timothy 3:16. 17 (CSB) says that all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that God’s servant may be equipped for every good work. Scripture is meant to shape us and equip us. Reading it is not a test you have to pass before God will welcome you.

When a verse is confusing, write down your question instead of deciding you’ve failed. Read the surrounding chapter. Look at a few related passages in a trusted Bible or study resource. Then take your questions to prayer or a mature Christian who will help you return to the text. You can also ask a search tool to suggest passages about a topic, but check every reference in the Bible itself and form your understanding from Scripture.

## Use Scripture as you make decisions

How to make biblical decisions isn’t about finding a verse that names every job, move, relationship, or opportunity in front of you. The Bible gives us God’s character, wisdom, commands, and examples to help us live faithfully. It helps us ask better questions about our choices.

For example, Scripture calls us to love our neighbors, speak truth, act with integrity, and care for others. When a decision touches one of those areas, the Bible gives you a foundation for discerning what is wise. It may not tell you which of two good job offers to accept, but it can guide you to consider your responsibilities, motives, gifts, and the people affected by your choice.

James 1:5 (CSB) offers this encouragement: “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God. Who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and it will be given to him.” James is speaking to believers facing trials, and his words remind us that God welcomes our request for wisdom. You can ask for help without pretending you already know the answer.

In the podcast conversation, Amanda described praying, pausing, and giving room for clarity to come in God’s time. She also talked about taking major decisions to Scripture first, then discussing them with pastors, a mentor, and her small group. That’s a healthy picture of discernment. Prayer and Scripture are central, and trusted Christian community can help you notice what you may have missed.

If a choice involves work or a career change, you may also find practical support in this guide to [trusting God with career decisions article](https://perspectivesintopractice.com/blog/trusting-god-career-decisions-taking-next-step). And if comparison is making it hard to see your own next step, read these [biblical ways to stop comparison article](https://perspectivesintopractice.com/blog/biblical-ways-stop-comparison-through-scripture). God’s direction for your life doesn’t need to look exactly like someone else’s.

## Grow in confidence without demanding certainty

Learning how to make biblical decisions can ease the pressure to get every choice perfect. Amanda shared that she used to feel anxious about major decisions and worry that someone might be upset with her. As she learned to read Scripture, pray, and talk things through with Christian people she trusted, she grew more confident in her next steps.

Confidence in God doesn’t mean you’ll never feel nervous. You may be making a wise choice and still feel the weight of change. You might need time to gather information, pray, and consider what the decision asks of you. Faith isn’t a guarantee that every option will feel easy. It’s a growing trust that God is with you as you seek to follow Him.

We also have to be careful not to turn every feeling, coincidence, or difficult moment into a message from God. Bring what you sense back to Scripture. Ask whether the choice reflects God’s character and biblical wisdom. Consider the practical facts. Invite honest feedback from people who know you and want to see you follow Jesus, not simply agree with you.

Sometimes clarity takes time. You can keep asking God for wisdom while you wait. Amanda said it simply: you don’t get to put God’s voice on a timeline. If the decision is not urgent, give yourself room to keep praying, learning, and listening. If it is urgent, ask for help and make the most faithful choice you can with what you know today.

## Practice a simple decision-making process

When you have a decision in front of you, try these steps. They won’t give you a formula that removes every unknown, but they can help you seek God with care.

1. Name the decision. Write down what you’re choosing between and what makes the choice difficult. Be honest about your fears, hopes, and responsibilities.
2. Read Scripture in context. Begin with a passage connected to the values involved. Read the whole section, not only a verse that seems to confirm what you already want.
3. Ask God for wisdom. Pray in plain words. You might say, “Lord, help me see what is true and show me the next faithful step.” Sit quietly afterward, but remember that prayer can include listening over time, not waiting for a dramatic feeling.
4. Gather helpful information. Consider the actual details, possible consequences, and people affected. Faith and practical thoughtfulness belong together.
5. Seek wise counsel. Talk with a pastor, mentor, or grounded Christian friend. Explain what you’ve read and prayed about, and ask them to help you think rather than make the decision for you.
6. Take the next faithful step. You may not see the whole road. Do what you understand to be wise and obedient today, then keep bringing your life to God.

If reading the Bible feels hard to fit into your day, start small. Read a few verses before you check your phone, listen to a Bible passage while you get ready, or join a study where you can ask questions. A healthy Bible habit is not another item to perform perfectly. It’s a way to spend time with God and learn what it means to follow Jesus.

Community can make that practice less lonely. Amanda found a women’s small group studying Proverbs, and she described how helpful it was to learn alongside other women. ## Keep walking with Jesus as you learn

There’s a difference between knowing about God and learning to walk with Him. That relationship grows through honest prayer, time in the Word, community, and everyday choices to practice what we learn. You may not feel confident right away. Keep showing up. Keep asking questions. God can meet you in the process.

How to make biblical decisions is not a secret reserved for a few especially spiritual people. You can learn to read Scripture, seek wisdom, and act with faith even while you’re still growing. You don’t have to memorize every verse or have every answer. Let the Bible form your understanding, invite wise people into the conversation, and give yourself grace as you practice.

What decision are you bringing to God right now? Take a few minutes to write it down, read a passage that speaks to the wisdom you need, and pray honestly. You are not alone as you learn. ## Frequently asked questions about reading the Bible for decisions

### How do I start reading the Bible if I don’t understand it?

Choose a short passage, read the surrounding chapter, and note what you observe before looking for an application. Use a clear translation and a trustworthy study resource when you need help. Ask questions and keep learning with a pastor, Bible study, or mature Christian friend.

### Can the Bible tell me exactly what decision to make?

Sometimes Scripture gives a clear command that applies to a choice. For many personal decisions, it offers wisdom and principles rather than naming one specific option. Consider the biblical values involved, pray, gather facts, and seek wise counsel as you discern a faithful next step.

### How can I tell whether I’m hearing God’s guidance?

Test what you sense against Scripture and God’s character. Make room for prayer, time, practical wisdom, and counsel from Christians you trust. Be cautious about treating a strong emotion or coincidence as proof on its own, and don’t pressure yourself to receive an instant answer.

### Do I need a pastor to interpret the Bible for me?

Pastors and teachers can offer valuable guidance, but you can also learn to read Scripture for yourself. Use trusted teachers to support your understanding and point you back to the biblical text. Ask questions and compare interpretations with the passage in context.

### What if I make the wrong decision?

Bring your choices to God honestly and seek to act with the wisdom you have. If you realize you made a mistake, you can ask for forgiveness, make amends where needed, and take another faithful step. God’s grace is present as you continue to grow.
