This encouragement is for Christian women who are praying for clarity, waiting for provision, or wondering whether an unexpected door is part of God’s plan. We’ll look at how to discern God’s direction through Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, peace, and faithful obedience. God gave me the name and the vision months before the retreat happened, but He did not give me every detail at once. I had no budget, no house, and no list of women who would attend. I had a yes, and then I had to learn how to discern God's direction one step at a time. ## When the First Door Is Only a Direction When I first sensed the Lord giving me the phrase Wholeness in the Wilderness, I immediately pictured a retreat in the woods. I thought I knew what the event would look like. I imagined the setting, the people, and the peaceful details. Then God asked me to wait. Waiting was difficult because I had a fresh idea and a lot of excitement. I wanted to move quickly. Instead, I prayed, closed my journal, and trusted that the Lord would tell me when it was time to begin. Months passed before I sensed Him say, “It’s time.” When the time finally came, I expected the next step to be clear. It was not. I knew I was supposed to move forward, but I did not know how the retreat would be paid for, where we would stay, or who would come. This is where how to discern God's direction became more than a question. It became a daily practice. The first door God opened was not the final destination. He pointed me toward a possible sponsor, but that person could not help. He led me toward one house, but it was not the right one. He gave me conversations that seemed unrelated, and then those conversations connected me to flowers, coffee, gifts, registrations, and eventually the house where the retreat took place. God was not misleading me. He was teaching me to follow Him instead of demanding the entire route before I obeyed. Sometimes the first direction helps position you for the answer that is still ahead. This may speak to the season you are in right now. Maybe you have one piece of information, one invitation, or one quiet conviction. You may not have enough to explain the whole story to someone else. You may not even have enough to reassure yourself. Can you bring that first step back to the Lord and ask Him what obedience looks like today? ## How to Discern God’s Direction with Scripture and Prayer Discernment is not guessing what God might want and then hoping everything works out. It is learning to recognize His leading through a growing relationship with Him. The more we know God’s character, the more carefully we can evaluate the voices, opportunities, fears, and desires competing for our attention. When I think about how to discern God's direction, I begin with Scripture. God will not lead us in a way that contradicts His Word or produces a life of pride, dishonesty, hatred, or manipulation. Scripture gives us a steady foundation when our emotions feel loud. Proverbs 3:5-6 (CSB) says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know him, and he will make your paths straight.” These verses do not promise that we will understand every turn. They invite us to know God in every part of our lives and trust Him with the path we cannot yet see. ### Four questions I use when I need clarity - Does this direction agree with Scripture? God’s leading will never require me to compromise truth or treat people carelessly. - What is motivating me? Am I responding to God’s invitation, or am I trying to prove myself, escape discomfort, or gain approval? - What happens when I pray and wait? Do I become more settled and obedient, or more frantic and controlling? - Can mature believers speak into this? Wise Christian community can help me notice what fear or excitement may be hiding. Prayer is not a way to pressure God into giving me the answer I prefer. Prayer helps me release my preferred answer. In the retreat story, I prayed for provision, but I assumed provision would look like money. God provided through women, local businesses, referrals, gifts, flowers, food, and relationships. He answered the prayer, but not according to the narrow picture in my mind. Help me recognize what is from You, release what is not, and trust You with what I cannot control.” Then write down what comes to mind and test it against Scripture, wise counsel, and the fruit it produces. When I realized I had no budget and very little time, I felt afraid. I cried in my truck and asked the Lord what I was supposed to do. Obedience did not make me feel instantly confident. We sometimes assume that peace means the absence of nerves. My experience has been different. God can give peace while I am still asking questions, counting costs, and feeling stretched beyond what I can manage. Jesus told His disciples in Mark 6:31 (CSB), “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” He spoke these words after they had been serving and giving to others. The invitation was not to become more productive. It was to come away with Him and receive rest. That Scripture became part of the foundation for the retreat, and it also reminded me that God’s work does not depend on my frantic effort. Peace is not the same as convenience. A peaceful direction may still require a difficult conversation, a brave request, a financial sacrifice, or a season of waiting. The question is not, “Do I feel completely comfortable?” The better question is, “Does this step line up with God’s Word, and can I take it with an honest heart before Him?” This is where how to discern God's direction requires patience. Fear often demands an immediate answer. The Holy Spirit can invite us to pause. You do not have to shame yourself for having questions. You can bring the questions into God’s presence and let Him teach you to listen. ## Practicing Your Next Faithful Yes God did not ask me to fill every retreat bed on the first day. He asked me to keep saying yes to the next right step. That meant sending an email, making a phone call, reaching out to a local business, praying again, and remaining open when the answer looked different from what I expected. Following God often becomes clearer when we stop trying to make one decision carry the weight of the entire future. Your next faithful yes may be small. It may be making an appointment, apologizing, applying for the opportunity, creating a budget, setting a boundary, or resting instead of forcing a result. ### Try this discernment practice this week 1. Name the decision. Write down what you are asking God about without adding your assumptions. 2. Surrender the outcome. Tell the Lord what you hope will happen, then give Him permission to lead differently. 3. Find the biblical principle. Look for Scripture that speaks to wisdom, integrity, patience, courage, or love. 4. Ask for wise input. Share the situation with someone who knows God’s Word and knows you well. 5. Choose the next obedient action. Do what is clear, and leave the next piece with God. 6. Review the fruit. Pay attention to whether this step is producing love, humility, peace, courage, and faithfulness. There may be times when the next step is to wait. Waiting is still obedience when God has not released you to move. I learned that during the months between receiving the retreat idea and beginning the preparations. A person said no. Someone else invited a friend. A community post about flowers brought new conversations. A woman offered access to her garden. Another person donated gift bags. Each event seemed small on its own. Looking back, I could see the trail. One connection led to another. A conversation opened a door. A closed door redirected me toward something better. The Lord had been moving before I could recognize what He was doing. This is one of the most practical lessons in how to discern God's direction: pay attention to what God has already done. Keep a record of answered prayers, repeated Scriptures, wise counsel, unexpected provision, and doors that closed with mercy. Sometimes clarity comes when you look back instead of trying to force yourself to see farther ahead. Ask yourself: - What people has God brought into my life recently? - What Scriptures keep returning to my heart? - Where have I seen provision that I did not plan? - What closed door may have protected or redirected me? - What step keeps returning as the faithful thing to do? God knew every woman who would come to that retreat. He knew the house, the conversations, the prayers, and the provision before I saw any of it. My responsibility was obedience. His responsibility was the outcome. ## God Is Faithful When You Only See One Piece You do not need God’s whole plan to give Him your next yes. You need enough grace for today, enough wisdom for the next step, and enough trust to remember who is leading you. Maybe the first door in front of you is not the final destination. Maybe it is teaching you something, connecting you with someone, or positioning you for provision you cannot see yet. Stay close to Jesus. Stay rooted in Scripture. Invite wise women into the process. Keep your hands open. I still do not know every detail of what God will do next, but I know He is faithful. I know He can provide in ways I would never plan. I know a closed door does not mean the story is over. And I know that when I look back, I will often find that He was already there.
