You love people, you want to help, and you’re willing to say yes to God. But does every open door mean you’re supposed to walk through it? In this post, we’ll talk about how to discern God’s calling, recognize the difference between compassion and assignment, and stay faithful when God gives you a yes before He gives you the full picture. I have seen a need and immediately assumed it was mine to fix. I have made plans, connected every detail, and tried to help God move the pieces into place. Can I tell you something? That kind of pressure leaves us exhausted, and it can pull us away from the peace of simply walking with Him. In our recent conversation on the podcast, Carolyn shared about her “yes, but not quite” season. God had placed her in two very different workplaces: a car dealership and a Christian nonprofit. She wondered what the next season would look like, but God was already using her where she stood. He was giving her opportunities to listen, encourage, invite, and plant seeds in the lives of people she never expected to reach. ## How to Discern God’s Calling Instead of Answering Every Need Carolyn said something on the podcast that stayed with me: every need is not God ringing your doorbell. Whew. I think many of us need to hear that, because caring women can easily confuse being needed with being called. There are hurting people everywhere. There are problems at church, needs in your family, coworkers who need encouragement, ministries looking for volunteers, and friends walking through hard seasons. God may give you compassion for some of those situations, but compassion by itself does not always mean you are responsible to take action. So how do you discern God’s calling? Start by remembering that Jesus Himself did not respond to every need in the same way. He healed many people, but He also withdrew to pray. He served others, but He stayed connected to the Father’s direction. His compassion was never controlled by pressure. When I feel pulled in ten directions, I try to pause and ask: - Lord, are You asking me to act, pray, listen, or simply care? - Is this my assignment, or am I reacting to someone else’s urgency? - Do I have the capacity and authority to help in a healthy way? - Does this opportunity agree with Scripture and God’s character? - What would obedience look like today? That last question is important. God may not be asking you to solve the whole problem. He may be asking you to send a message, sit with someone over coffee, share your testimony, or pray faithfully behind the scenes. ## Signs a Need May Be Part of Your God-Given Assignment Discerning God’s calling does not mean waiting for a dramatic voice from heaven before you do anything. Often, God leads through Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, preparation, spiritual gifts, and repeated opportunities to serve. ### A holy burden keeps returning Have you noticed a particular group of people or type of need coming to your attention again and again? Carolyn noticed young adults at the dealership who were skeptical of church and unsure about faith. She did not force conversations. She paid attention, built relationships, and stayed available. A holy burden usually draws you toward love and faithful action. It does not demand that you become someone’s savior. It reminds you that God may want to use your presence, your story, or your listening ear. ### Your gifts fit the opportunity God often gives us assignments that connect with the ways He has already shaped us. Carolyn loves communication, broadcasting, writing, and connecting people. Even while working in a secular environment, those gifts were being used. She helped young people ask questions, connected a father’s book with young dads, and encouraged a young writer to take his calling seriously. Take a quiet look at your life. What do people naturally come to you for? Where do you notice fruit when you serve? What skills, experiences, and spiritual gifts has God developed over time? ### Wise believers recognize confirmation God can speak personally, but we should not isolate ourselves when making important decisions. Trusted, mature believers can help us notice blind spots and test what we think we’re hearing. Scripture gives us a steady foundation. Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God” (CSB). Paul connects discernment with a renewed mind. We do not have to be driven by fear, comparison, or the pressure to impress people. When God is leading, His direction will not require you to compromise His Word. His call may stretch you, but it will not ask you to become dishonest, controlling, reckless, or unloving. ## Why Faithfulness Where You Are Matters Before the Next Assignment One of the most encouraging parts of Carolyn’s story was the way God used her current workplace. She had wondered what came next. She had a desire to return to broadcasting and Christian media. Then God opened the door for her to attend the National Religious Broadcasters Convention, a possibility that seemed far beyond what she could arrange on her own. But the convention was not the beginning of her usefulness. God had already been using her at the dealership. The conversations, the invitations, the listening, and the quiet encouragement were all part of His work. Here’s the thing, friends. We often want the platform, but God may be preparing us through the ordinary place. We want the next ministry, but He may be teaching us faithfulness in the job we already have. We want clarity about the future, but He may be inviting us to love the person in front of us today. Zechariah 4:10 asks, “For who despises the day of small things?” (ESV). In context, Zerubbabel was rebuilding the temple after a difficult season. The work looked small compared with the vision, but God was present in every measured step. The passage also reminds us that the work would be accomplished “not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit” (Zechariah 4:6, ESV). We cannot despise the small link in the chain because we do not know what God is connecting it to. A conversation may become a relationship. A relationship may become an invitation. An invitation may become a turning point. Your faithful work may prepare you for something you cannot see yet. God usually gives enough light for the next step. He does not always give the entire map. ### 1\. Bring the desire honestly to God Tell God what you want. Tell Him what you hope will happen. Tell Him what scares you. I do not think we need to pretend our motives are perfect before we pray. We can say, “Lord, I want this, but I want Your will more. Show me what is from You and what is from me.” Honest prayer makes room for surrender. Still, there is a difference between holy courage and frantic pressure. Pressure says, “You have to make this happen right now.” Faith says, “I can obey the next step and trust God with the outcome.” Carolyn described learning to keep her hands off what God was doing. She recognized her tendency to plan and manipulate when the logistics seemed impossible. Each time, she had to remember that if the opportunity was truly from God, He could provide the way. ### 4\. Ask for wise confirmation Share the situation with people who know you well and want God’s best for you. Ask them to pray, not simply to approve your plan. Listen for wisdom that brings clarity without feeding fear. ### 5\. Take the next faithful step Sometimes the next step is small. Make the phone call. Submit the application. Have the conversation. Rest. Wait. Learn. Show up on time and do your work well. Faithfulness is still obedience when nobody applauds it. ## How to Wait With Open Hands When God Has Not Revealed What Is Next The “yes, but not quite” season can feel uncomfortable because you know God has stirred something in you, but you cannot see how it will unfold. You may feel ready while the circumstances seem unfinished. You may wonder whether you missed something. My friend, waiting does not mean God has forgotten you. It may be the place where He is deepening your trust, strengthening your character, and connecting you with people you could not have reached any other way. When you feel tempted to force the outcome, remember these practices: - Pray for today’s assignment instead of demanding tomorrow’s details. - Keep doing the work God has already given you. - Write down answered prayers and small confirmations. - Stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit without becoming obsessed with every feeling. - Give yourself permission to say no when a need is not yours to carry. - Stay connected to healthy Christian community.
